The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor unsung work and delight the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
