The former Brazilian president detained after being deemed a risk of fleeing
Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.
This involved trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.
His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your nation, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his "relocation to foreign missions near the residence, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on the next day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
The former president was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The police stepped in and around 1,500 people were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the next presidential race.
