Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined lifestyle management.
