Minister Confirms MoD Examining Security Risk from Vehicles from China, with Personnel Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.
A defence minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been told to avoid discussing classified matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for Defence Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on a radio station, a defence minister addressed claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Defence Context
The announcement follows reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.
This wider security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in every areas of government operations, including transport use to discussions practices.
